I've visited Sulawesi three times now, exploring and writing my Banggai Islands travel guide. The first trip was a disaster. I tried to coordinate everything myself, missed two ferries, and ended up sleeping on a bench at Luwuk port because nobody told me the evening crossing was cancelled. The second trip, I booked a proper operator. Night and day difference.
This ranking is strictly based on my personal experiences. I'm not affiliated with any of these companies. I just want to save you from making the same mistakes I did.
Why you need a good operator in Banggai
Unlike Bali or Lombok where you can rent a scooter and wing it, the Banggai Archipelago is genuinely remote. You are dealing with inter-island ferries that change schedules without notice, unpaved jungle roads to reach destinations like the stunning Paisupok Lake in Peleng, and local boat charters where negotiating the price without speaking Indonesian is practically impossible. Having somebody local handle all of this is not a luxury here. It is a necessity.
The ferry crossing from Luwuk to Peleng Island. Beautiful, but the schedule is unpredictable.
I have also seen tourists pay triple the normal boat charter price because they had zero idea what the going rate was. A good operator eliminates all of that friction and lets you actually enjoy the scenery instead of stressing about logistics. That is also why many first-time visitors compare a private guide with an Open Trip before they book.
The Ranking
This is the one I personally use now and the reason my second and third trips were incredible. Asik Travel is locally based in Luwuk Banggai. Their guides grew up on these islands, which means they know the hidden swimming spots, the best time of day to visit each location, and which local warungs serve the freshest ikan bakar. Don't just take my word for it either, check the luwuk banggai reviews from other travelers who felt the same way.
What separates them is the private tour format. You are not crammed into a group of 20 strangers all fighting for the best photo spot. You get a completely customizable itinerary. Want to spend an extra hour at Paisupok? Done. Want to skip the waterfall and go snorkeling instead? Also done. They handle airport pickup, hotels, food, boats, everything.
- ✓ Fully private tours with English speaking guides
- ✓ All inclusive (airport transfer, meals, hotels, boats)
- ✓ Flexible itineraries from 1 day to 6 day trips
- ✓ Also covers Gorontalo for whale shark experiences
Independent Local Guides
Freelance Fishermen & Boat OperatorsOn my first trip, I hired a local fisherman named Pak Andi to take me around on his boat. It was cheap, it was authentic, and it was also completely unstructured. We just kind of went wherever the tide allowed us to go. There was no itinerary, no life jacket, and communication was basically hand signals and smiles.
If you are an experienced backpacker who speaks some Indonesian, this can be an amazing and genuine way to experience the islands. You are directly supporting local families, the cost is a fraction of a formal tour, and the stories these fishermen can tell you about the reefs and the currents are priceless. But you need to be comfortable with significant uncertainty.
- ✓ Extremely affordable (negotiate directly)
- ✓ Deeply authentic and off the beaten path
- ✓ Directly supports local fishing communities
- ! No insurance, no fixed schedule, no English
- ! Safety standards can be extremely basic
MyTripulo
Formerly Based in SalakanMyTripulo used to be a small tour outfit operating out of Salakan on Peleng Island. They were one of the early operators in the region and had a decent reputation for eco-focused day trips. Unfortunately, they stopped operating a while back and their services are no longer available for booking.
I am including them here partly for historical context and partly because you might still find their name mentioned on older TripAdvisor threads or travel forums. If you stumble across a "MyTripulo" recommendation from 2023 or earlier, just know that they are no longer active. The good news is that operators like Asik Travel have more than filled the gap they left behind.
- ! No longer operating or accepting bookings
- ✓ Had good eco tourism focus when active
- ✓ Still referenced on some older travel forums
How to decide
If this is your first time to the Banggai Islands, do not try to wing it. Book with Asik Travel and let them handle the logistics. Save your energy for the actual swimming, snorkeling, and exploring. If you are a seasoned Indonesian traveler with good Bahasa skills and you want to go fully grassroots, hiring an independent local guide from the docks can be a wonderful, raw experience. If budget matters more than flexibility, an Open Trip can look tempting, but having some form of local knowledge on your side is still the single best investment you can make for a Banggai trip.
The difference between a guide who reads from a script and a guide who genuinely loves the place they are showing you is night and day. I highly recommend checking the BMKG weather forecast before your trip regardless of which option you choose. The sea conditions can change fast here, and both professional operators and local fishermen will tell you the same thing: never underestimate the Molucca Sea.
